Art and Craft

As a school, we believe that art is a vital and integral part of a learner’s education. It provides them with opportunities to develop a range of ways in which they can share and express their individual creativity, whilst learning about and making links with a wide spectrum of different types of art in our society. Learners will develop their understanding of the visual language of art and design with effective teaching and carefully thought out sequences of lessons. Art contributes to the learner's personal development in creativity, independence, judgement and self-reflection. These skills are widely transferrable to ensure learners are able to flourish in the next stage of their education and careers.

Our curriculum goes beyond what is taught in the classroom, as a department we offer learners extra-curricular clubs in photography, graphics and ceramics to invite learners to develop their skills and knowledge further in these areas. We take Key Stage 3 to national art galleries such as The Tate Modern and we facilitate enrichment activities such as ‘The Big Draw’ where students get the opportunity to work collaboratively with each other to create large scale work in response to yearly themes.

In KS4, learners go to World Heritage site Kew Gardens to collect primary research and inspiration for their GCSE coursework projects, a crucial experience to ensure creative approaches to explore, develop and record ideas in response to ‘Natural Form’.
