School Council Trip to Parliament

On 9th September 2024, representatives from our Student Council enjoyed a trip to Parliament.

Students represented Orchards Academy with great pride and the Education Team at Parliament commented on how engaged and well-mannered they were. They took part in a tour of the building, learning about its history and functions before participating in a workshop on petitions and how UK citizens and residents, including those below voting age, could lobby the government for change through this process. They created and presented their own petitions on the topics of scrapping university fees, an alternative to road tax, free medical prescriptions for all and equipping all school aged children with electronic devices.

A highlight was having the opportunity to meet and question his Lieutenant Colonel Lincoln Jopp, the conservative MP for Spelthorne, who gave them some insight into the nitty gritty of his job and his journey to becoming an MP.
