Holocaust Memorial Day
Friday 26th January marked our Holocaust Memorial Day at Orchards Academy. Year 9 took part in a day of learning about the Holocaust, with a focus on this year’s theme ‘The Fragility of Freedom’. Teachers across a number of subjects delivered some excellent lessons looking at different aspects of the Holocaust and remembrance.
Year 9 pupils also attended a presentation delivered by John Wood, who told the story of his father, a Major in the military, and part of the British troops who liberated Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. John delivered an outstanding and thought-provoking presentation that included a detailed personal account of the liberation of the camp, as well as many historical and personal photographs. John’s talk emphasised the importance of Human Rights and gave hope that future atrocities may be prevented through remembrance of the Holocaust and human rights education.
